Returning from Academic Dismissal Appeal
If you were not in academic good standing (academic probation, suspension or dismissal) when you initially left the University, you are required to meet re-admission requirements set by Undergraduate Admissions and successfully complete an online Former Student Application.
In addition to the steps above, if you are returning from Academic Dismissal and were prohibited from enrolling at UNCG for one academic year, you must also petition the Return from Academic Dismissal Review Committee in the Students First Office and request permission to return to the University.
How the Return from Academic Dismissal Works...
Please review the Instructions for Returning from Academic Dismissal thoroughly. Then, when you are ready, schedule an appointment with a Students First Office advisor to review the information you plan on presenting for review.
By meeting with a Students First Office advisor, you will:
- Review the information you provide in your letter of explanation to ensure all appropriate details have been given
- Evaluate your documentation to ensure all appropriate materials are included in your appeal
- Receive guidance on next steps in the review process
- Develop alternative plans for continuing academic progress should an appeal be denied
Once your appeal and accompanying documentation is complete, you should turn your materials in to the Students First Office front desk staff in 061 McIver Building, where it will be reviewed by the Return from Academic Dismissal Review Committee.
Appeals are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the academic year. In order to appeal to return to classes, the appeal must be submitted by the dates listed below:

*Please note that dismissal appeals are only accepted for the fall or spring semesters; materials for summer sessions will not be accepted.
**Please note that the December and Augustr deadlines are determined by the Undergraduate Admissions deadline for submitting a Former Student Application for the fall and spring terms. .

After the Return from Academic Dismissal Review Committee renders a decision about your appeal, you will receive further information via your UNCG email account (please be sure to check it regularly so that you do not miss pertinent updates).
While advisors in the Students First Office are an excellent resource for helping you prepare your appeal they do not serve on the committee and will not have any information regarding the committee's decisions. Once you receive a decision via email, any questions should be directed to the Director of the Students First Office.
