Exploring with Purpose - Career Exploration
Make a List of Occupations to Explore
By taking some assessments and exploring major options at UNCG, you will begin to have a sense of what areas you are passionate about in life. Now it is time to start learning about potential occupations. There are two common ways to approach this:
- Matching “self” to potential occupations: There are a number of websites that will help you begin to do this including My Next Move and the College Foundation of North Carolina.
- Matching “occupations” to self: Many people like to begin their research with learning about occupations and what these occupations typically require to be successful. Websites to assist you in exploring occupations and career paths include: The Occupational Outlook Handbook, O*Net Online, Career One Stop, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Projections.
In addition to the resources above, your career exploration process can be enhanced by conducting informational interviews and job shadowing.
- Informational interviews are an opportunity for you to interview professionals working in potential fields, positions, and companies of interest to you.
- Job shadowing is an opportunity for you to follow a professional through their work day.
Both of these are opportunities for you to experience first-hand what it would be like to work in your areas of interest. To learn more about these experiences, visit the Career Services Center in the EUC room #1.
