During your time at UNCG, you may encounter unexpected and extenuating circumstances that significantly inhibit your ability to succeed academically. When situations like this arise, an Appeal to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances (WEC) may be an option to help you recover academically from these events.

Note: students cannot retroactively appeal to withdraw from a semester after their degree has been conferred.

There are two types of Appeals to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances:

  • Total WEC – an appeal to be withdrawn from all courses on a student’s academic record for a given semester
  • Selective WEC – an appeal to be withdrawn from one or more courses, while keeping other course credit in the same semester. Note: requires an explanation of your ability to be successful in some courses but not in others, relative to your extenuating circumstances

Required Components for Appeals to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances:

  • Letter of Explanation
  • Official Documentation
  • Course Syllabi (for selective WECs only)

Please review the Guide to Appeal to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances (WEC) thoroughly for helpful information about preparing your appeal. Then, when you are ready, schedule an appointment with a Students First Office advisor to review the materials you plan on submitting for Committee review.

By meeting with a Students First Office advisor, you will:

  • Review the information you provide in your letter of explanation to ensure all appropriate details have been provided
  • Receive feedback on your official documentation to ensure you have included documentation supporting all aspects of your circumstances
  • Learn about the next steps in the WEC process

Once you have finalized all appeal materials, submit them for committee review via the Appeal to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances submission portal.

Appeals to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances (WEC) can only be submitted until the deadlines posted below. Although the WEC Committee meets bi-weekly during the regular academic year, the abundance of appeals received each semester means that most appeal decisions take approximately 4 weeks.  The final submission deadline occurs on the last Wednesday in March, June, and October as follows:

*Students should submit their Appeal to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances as soon as they can provide the needed materials. Priority deadlines are intended to support students in receiving a decision on their appeal(s) by the end of the upcoming fall or spring term.

The flowchart below outlines the appeal process from the point of submission to committee decision, including recommended steps for how to proceed if your appeal is denied.

While advisors in the Students First Office are an excellent resource for helping you prepare your Appeal to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances (WEC) and can also provide updates regarding where your request is in the process, they do not serve on the Committee and will not have additional information regarding the Committee’s decisions. Once you receive a decision via your UNCG email, any questions should be directed to [email protected].
