Academic Probation & Continuing Probation

Academic Probation

Students who do not meet the 2.0 cumulative GPA requirement of Academic Good Standing will be placed on Academic Probation.

All students on Academic Probation are held to the following requirements:

Limit your enrollment to 16 semester hours every fall and spring term and 8 hours in the summer (4 hours per summer session) until Academic Good Standing is restored

Earn a minimum 2.30 term GPA each term until a 2.00 cumulative GPA is restored

Enroll in and successfully complete the requirements of the ARS 100 course (when required)

Students who fall on Academic Probation are eligible to continue the next semester at UNCG.

ARS 100

New first-year students who fall on Academic Probation in their first year and new transfer students who fall on probation in their first term at UNCG are registered for and required to participate in and complete ARS 100: Reclaim, Regain and Recover, during their next semester of enrollment.

Key components of ARS 100:

Two meetings with your assigned Academic Recovery Coach

Virtual personal and academic success-focused seminars

Small amount of online coursework

ARS 100 will help you:

Establish a supportive relationship with your ARS coach

Learn to calculate your GPA and the GPA you need to restore Academic Good Standing

Discover and utilize resources for achieving academic goals and personal success

Increase awareness of University policy, resources, and success strategies

Failure to meet all ARS 100 requirements and terms of their probationary period can result in Academic Suspension from UNCG.

Any student required to take ARS 100 will be enrolled by the Students First Office. If at any time you have questions about your participation, you may contact your assigned Academic Recovery Coach or [email protected].

Continuing Probation

Students on Academic Probation or Continuing Probation who meet the probationary requirements below without restoring Academic Good Standing are placed on Continuing Probation. Students on Continuing Probation will be held to the following requirements each semester, including summer, until Academic Good Standing is restored:

Limit your enrollment to 16 semester hours every fall and spring term and 8 hours in the summer (4 hours per summer session) until Academic Good Standing is restored

Earn a minimum 2.30 term GPA each term until a 2.00 cumulative GPA is restored

Submit a Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal each term they are on Continuing Probation and wish to receive Financial Aid

Failure to meet probationary terms

Students who have not yet encountered Academic Suspension or Dismissal will be Academically Suspended if they do not meet the probationary requirements while on Continuing Academic Probation.

Students who have returned from Academic Suspension or Dismissal will be Academically Dismissed if they do not meet the probationary requirements while on Continuing Academic Probation.

FAQs

Once a student is placed on Academic Probation, they cannot appeal to change their Academic Standing. However, if a student’s cumulative GPA rises to a 2.0 or higher due to a grade replacement, an approved Appeal to Withdraw for Extenuating Circumstances, or an incomplete (I) or not reported (NR) grade update, their Academic Standing can be updated by contacting us at [email protected].

One of the requirements of the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy requires students to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Therefore, when a student is on Academic Probation, they are not in compliance with the SAP policy. Students will receive notification of their financial aid standing at the end of each term, along with instructions for any necessary next steps. Read more about the SAP Policy and SAP Appeals here.

Students on Academic Probation and Continuing Academic Probation are eligible to enroll in courses in the next semester at UNCG.

Students on Academic Probation are limited to 16 semester hours every fall and spring term and 8 hours in the summer (4 hours per summer session) until Academic Good Standing is restored. If you are on Academic Probation and you wish to take more than the allotted number of semester hours in a term, you must submit a Maximum Credit Hours Increase Request Form to the Students First Office.
