Periodically, everyone needs a “do over” and, if you qualify, there are some policies at UNCG that can help you achieve that with your academic record. With the Academic Renewal Policy, qualifying students can be granted grade forgiveness for all previously completed courses in which you earned a grade of D+ or below. Courses and grades will remain on your academic transcript, but the grades and hours earned will be expunged from your cumulative GPA and from your mandated degree requirements.

Below are the required steps to request Academic Renewal:

To PRE-QUALIFY, students must meet all the following criteria:

  • Have been formerly enrolled at the University
  • Have less than a 2.00 cumulative GPA
  • Have been away from UNCG for two full terms (For the purposes of Academic Renewal, summer does not count as a term away.)

In addition, students must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have NOT enrolled at any other institution of higher education (including community college) during the year immediately prior to their return to UNCG
  • Completed 24 hours of UNCG-approved college credit with a 2.50 GPA or higher since their last enrollment at UNCG

If you meet the pre-qualification criteria listed above, to FULLY QUALIFY for Academic Renewal you must:

  • Be re-admitted and enroll at UNCG
  • Earn a 2.30 term GPA in your first 12 semester hours following re-enrollment

Submit an Academic Renewal Request for committee review. You will be notified of the committee’s decision via your UNCG email.

Please note that Academic Renewal can only be granted one time during a student’s academic career and cannot be reversed. Additionally, students who receive approval for an Academic Renewal Request cannot utilize the Grade Replacement Policy in future semesters.

Committee Review & Decisions

The Academic Renewal Committee meets once a month to review Academic Renewal requests. Please review the upcoming deadlines to submit an Academic Renewal request and the corresponding date on when you should expect to receive your decision:

Academic Renewal FAQs

Any grades of D+ and below will remain on your transcript. However, those grades will no longer be calculated into your GPA.

If you are approved for academic renewal and you have any D+, D, or D- grades, you may have to take additional courses to fulfill the requirements those courses were originally counting for.

You can work with an advisor in the Students First Office to estimate what your projected GPA might be following academic renewal, or you can utilize the online GPA Calculator

The Department of Education does not allow the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships to exclude any credit or grades when evaluating financial aid eligibility – even those approved for exclusion from your GPA by Academic Renewal. If your request is approved, you may be required to complete a financial aid appeal.

If you do not enroll in and earn 12 hours in your first term back, the committee will combine your term GPA across semesters, until you have completed and earned 12 hours.
